Biography

German actor, on stage from 1908. In films from 1915, as romantic or heroic figures. Member of the Preussische Staatstheater under Gustav Gruendgens , 1935-45. President of the Reichstheaterkammer from 1942. Appeared in Nazi propaganda films and was consequently banned from acting for three years after the war. Re-emerged as a character player during the 1950's.

Paul Hartmann also appeared in movies with propagandist leanings like "Bismarck" (1940) and "Ich klage an" (1941) during the war time, which entailed an entrance prohibition after the war.

His stage and film career suffered a short break when he was called up into the military service in 1917, after that he continued the career smoothly.

From 1927 he turned away from the film business and devoted his career exclusively to the theater where he acted at the Burgtheater in Vienna.

His first film experiences came into being in 1915 where he played in movies as "Zofia" (1915), "Der Trick" (1915), and "Die verschleierte Dame" (1915).
