Lefteris Haronitis

Lefteris Haronitis is a Greek director whose long-standing career across cinema, theatre and television has been defined by a deep commitment to documentary filmmaking and cultural storytelling. Trained in both naval engineering and directing, he developed a distinctive creative path from the early stages of his career, ultimately focusing almost exclusively on creative documentaries, a field in which he has directed more than one hundred works. His filmography reflects a sustained engagement with Greek history, literature and identity, with notable titles including Nikos Kazantzakis - Akrovatis pano apo to haos (2009), El Greco - Prosopografies (2017) and O ihos tou hronou: T' Anogeia kai o kosmos 1900-1945 (2013) among many others that explore historical figures, artistic legacies and collective memory. Alongside his cinematic work, he has also directed a select body of theatre productions, staging works by writers such as Kostas Varnalis, Petros Markaris, Tennessee Williams and Harold Pinter, demonstrating a parallel interest in dramatic literature and performance. Beyond his artistic output, he has played an active institutional role within Greece's cultural landscape, serving in leadership positions in professional and cultural organizations and contributing to the development of national film policy through his involvement with the Greek Film Centre.
