He battled alcoholism and a crack cocaine addiction in his early-to mid-twenties, but has been sober since 2003. He spent much time drinking alcohol and using crack cocaine to cope with stresses and has suffered dysthymia.

Leonardo DiCaprio convinced him to read the screenplay of The Revenant (2015) and take the role of John Fitzgerald. They became friends after starring together in director Christopher Nolan's Inception (2010).

Hardy signed the Artists4Ceasefire open letter to U.S. President Joe Biden, calling an immediate and permanent ceasefire during the Gaza war, the release of all hostages, and the delivery of life-saving assistance to the civilians of Gaza. the letter reads: "We believe all life is sacred, no matter faith and ethnicity and we condemn the killing of Palestinian and Israeli civilians.".
