British poet and novelist of the country genre (all set in Wessex), a master at regional dialect. He was initially trained as an architect and turned to full-time writing in 1867. He was a pessimist, taking a fairly grim view of life, often focusing on unhappiness, failure and unrequited love or passion.

He allegedly declined British knighthood but accepted the Order of Merit for his services to literature.
