Biography

Paul Hardy was born on July 1, 1908 in Berchem, Flanders, Belgium. He was a writer, known for Hendrik Conscience (1963), Pastoor Campens (1958) and Je smalle hals, kleine koningin... (1958). He died on December 1, 1977 in Wilrijk, Flanders, Belgium.

Paul Hardy studied Germanic philology in Leuven (Flanders).

As a book reviewer he never formalized his views in a comprehensive argument, and the interested reader must search for and compile them themselves, scattered as they are across hundreds of reviews in De Gazet van Antwerpen and Boekengids, the monthly magazine of the Catholic Center for Reading Information and Library Services.

It's striking that Hardy, whose criticism was so well-considered, expressed his opinions with such reserve. If I may, he will write, "It seems to me, I believe, it is possible, it might be"-all linguistic forms of cautious, therefore not yet self-doubting wisdom.

Paul Hardy, who was a modest man, was once heard to say: 'I am a reviewer, a book reviewer, and nothing more. This was difficult to agree with, as this characterization did not correspond to his true significance as a literary scholar. It seemed more fitting to at least call him a critic, or even a romantic theorist.
