Elaine Hammerstein was born on 16 June 1894 in New York City, New York, USA. She was an actress, known for The Midnight Express (1924), Rupert of Hentzau (1923) and The Foolish Virgin (1924). She was married to James Walter Kays. She died on 13 August 1948 in Tijuana, Mexico.

Daughter of producer <a class="ipc-md-link ipc-md-link--entity" href="/name/nm0358565/?ref_=nmtrv_trv">Arthur Hammerstein</a>.

Was killed along with her husband, James W. Kays and two other prominent Los Angeles residents in a head on collision on the Tijuana-Ensenada highway.

Cousin of <a class="ipc-md-link ipc-md-link--entity" href="/name/nm0358564/?ref_=nmtrv_trv">Oscar Hammerstein II</a>.

Granddaughter of <a class="ipc-md-link ipc-md-link--entity" href="/name/nm1945599/?ref_=nmtrv_trv">Oscar Hammerstein</a>.

Brunette silent screen actress. Acted on Broadway in 1913 and 1915, making her screen debut in &quot;The Moonstone&quot; (1915). Appeared mostly in minor melodramas until leaving films in 1926.

Husband James W. Kays had been a Los Angeles police commissioner and a finance director for the California Democratic Party.
