Biography

His most notable role was a television commercial actor known by millions of Americans named Calvin, who was a handyman who always cleaned his sinks with a heavily advertised cleaning product known as Ajax.

He was a vaudeville performer in 1915 as a teenager and then served in the US Navy. He was a draftsman in the Los Angeles area for the phone company helping establish phone service. His older brother, Mark Hamilton, invited him to the set of The Light of Western Stars (1925) to watch the filming where he developed even more interest for acting.

He was a resident of Pasadena from 1924 to 1964; whereby, he spent the last year of his life in Newport Beach. He was a graduate of the Pasadena Playhouse where he appeared in "Captain Brassbound's Conversion"(played the character Osman), "Lightnin", as well as other plays from 1932 to 1933. He then worked as the director of dramatics at St. James Methodist Church for 10 years as well as an actor and director at the Glendale Center Theatre for over 10 years prior to entering Hollywood films and TV serials in 1954.

Joseph Hamilton was the younger brother of silent film character actor Mark Hamilton.

Served as a Pharmacists Mate 2nd Class Petty Officer in the US Navy and then worked for the telephone company in LA before his Hollywood career.
