Mat Hames is a director, writer and executive producer, known for his two Independent Lens documentaries What Was Ours (2017) and When I Rise (2010) and for documentary series Power Trip: the Story of Energy (2020-2024). His films have screened at SXSW, HotDocs, IDFA, AFI, the Santa Barbara Film Festival, LA Shorts Fest, Big Sky Documentary Festival, and SundanceTV. When I Rise (2010) was nominated for an IDA Award in the category of Best Music Documentary. Fossil Country (2024) was nominated for a National News and Documentary Emmy. He was Knighted by King Albert II of Belgium for directing the WW2 documentary Last Best Hope which traces an American Pilot who evaded the Germans with the help of the Belgian Resistance. He is a co-founder of Austin, Texas based production company Alpheus Media.

He received a national Emmy nomination at the 45th Annual News & Documentary Emmys® for Fossil Country (2023). His doc series "A State of Mind" is a regional Emmy award-winning documentary series. In 2024, the episode, "The Battle Inside," won a National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Heartland Chapter Emmy Award. In 2023, the series earned three Heartland Emmys for episodes, "The Lone Wolf" and "The Pickup Man." A third episode, "The Cowboy Code," was also nominated. When I Rise (Independent Lens) was nominated for an IDA Award in the category of Best Music Documentary. He is a co-founder of agency Alpheus Media who has produced content for PBS, SundanceTV, Warner Brothers Discovery, Prime Video, as well as commercial work for clients. He is married to Executive Producer Beth Hames.
