Disappointment came at losing the part of Bonnie in Bonnie and Clyde (1967) to Faye Dunaway. Also in the running were Natalie Wood, Tuesday Weld and Sue Lyon. She also regretted losing the femme lead opposite Elvis Presley in The Trouble with Girls (1969) which went to Marlyn Mason.

In 1965 a woman impersonating her stole $10,000 worth of merchandise from various boutiques in Los Angeles. She was caught and imprisoned, but several years after her release she again began impersonating Hale and married a total of ten men across Texas and Oklahoma.

Right on the heels of the release of "Our man Flint" it was announced there would be a sequel " In like Flint". It was announced that Jean Hale got the part of the lead female and she was very excited and happy as this was her biggest role in her career. Shortly afterward she was informed by the studio she would be posing nude in a Playboy pictorial layout to promote the film. Jean refused but the studio started to apply pressure but Jean remained steadfast as she grew up a Mormon and felt this went against her religious upbringing. This in a day where studios had considerable power.The studio had a group of actors and actresses to talk to Jean to change her mind. They informed of all the other young actresses who had posed and how it had helped their careers and got them more roles. They told Jean she wasn't a spring chicken ( 27) anymore. One actress allegedly said she should get to Playboy quick in her birthday suit and have them take pictures.Jean said she would be degraded and humiliated if she posed. One actress allegedly said that's exactly what they want, your a stunning blonde and they want you degraded and humiliated don't you understand? The group left her thinking they had changed her mind. One famous actor allegedly informed the studio that Jean's tits and ass were as good as in the bag. But Jean hadn't changed her mind at all. The studio came up with a back up plan of posing Jean wearing men's pajama tops and men's button down shirts. But Jean refused saying she wouldn't pose in Playboy clothed, semi- clothed or nude as it was a magazine that promoted humiliating women sexually. Jean said Playboy exploited women by posing them in sexually compromising positions.. She said she didn't want to be exploited by Playboy. Later in the year Jean had a small part in " The St. Valentine's day massacre " and had a fight scene with George Siegel in which her dress was ripped off her. Jean was wearing a very sexy black slip. The fight scene continued but the director decided Jean should be stripped but Jean refused. Later she was up for the leading female role in " the trouble with girls" and then she was up for the role as Bonnie in " Bonnie and Clyde". She was very close for both parts but didn't get them. Jean was up for a role in " The valley of the dolls but even though she was close to getting it when she found out there was a semi nude scene Jean pulled out of the project. It left the St. Valentine's day massacre as her last film role. It leaves one to think if she had done the pictorial spread what would have happened in her career.
