Biography

John Gunter was born on October 31, 1938 in Billericay, Essex, England, UK. He was a production designer and costume designer, known for Great Performances (1971), Stevie (1978) and Otello (2012). He was married to Micheline McKnight. He died on March 22, 2016 in England, UK.

He was awarded the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award in 1985 (1984 season) for Best Designer, for "Wild Honey".

He was nominated for a 1998 Laurence Olivier THeatre Award for Best Set Designer of 1997 for the Peter Hall Company's 1997 Season at the Old Vic Theatre.

He was awarded the 1982 London Critics' Circle Theatre Award (Drama Theatre Award) for Best Designer of 1981 for "Guys and Dolls" and "The Beggar's Opera".

He was nominated for a 2003 London Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Stage Designer for "Love's Labour Lost", performed at the Royal National Theatre.

Was nominated for Broadway's 1983 Tony Award as Best Scenic Designer for "All's Well That Ends Well."
