Clu Gulager

Trivia

Clu Gulager

  • Given the script for M*A*S*H (1970). He turned down the offer because he hated it. He says that was one of his biggest career mistakes.
  • Served in the US Marine Corps, stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA, from 1946-48.
  • He grew up an only child on his alcoholic uncle's farm near Tahlequah, OK. Clu (the nickname means "Red Bird") is part Cherokee and is Will Rogers's cousin.
  • His father, John Gulager, was a Broadway actor-vaudevillian who worked with George M. Cohan.
  • Attended Northeastern State College (now Northeastern State University) in Tahlequah, OK, in the late 1940s.
  • He and wife, Miriam Byrd-Nethery, had two sons--John Gulager (b. 12/19/57) and Tom Gulager (b. 7/21/65).
  • Started out in experimental theatre in Paris under the guidance of actor Jean-Louis Barrault.
  • Got nickname from his father for the clu-clu birds nesting at the Gulager home at the time Clu was born.
  • Was Earl Hamner Jr.'s first choice for the male lead role in Falcon Crest (1981), which starred Jane Wyman. He appeared in the unaired pilot episode "The Vintage Years," but was not rehired. Robert Foxworth was cast in the lead male role of Chase Gioberti, continuing until his departure at the end of Season 6 in 1987.
  • Acting protégé of Barry Sullivan.
  • Signed with Universal Pictures in the 1960s as a contract player.
  • Revitalized his career in the 1980s in scores of horror flicks that took advantage of his ever-growing, wild-eyed eccentricities.
  • Father of Tom Gulager and John Gulager.
  • Appeared in two films nominated for Best Picture Oscar: The Last Picture Show (1971) and Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019).
  • His last name is pronounced as "GOO-luh-ger", the first syllable almost rhymes with his first name.
  • At 93, he was the third longest-lived "Nightmare on Elm Street" cast member, having appeared in A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985)). Priscilla Pointer (who appeared in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)) is currently the second at 98, while Zsa Zsa Gabor who also appeared in Dream Warriors (but as herself) is overall the longest-lived at 99.
  • Passed away just two days before his McQ (1974) co-star Roger E. Mosley.
