Angelika Gruber met Volker Schlöndorff during the shooting of Circle of Deceit (1981), which he directed and she was an assistant editor. They became a couple in 1991, and Schlöndorff divorced his then wife, Margarethe von Trotta. They stayed married until her death from severe sickness, aged 65 on Xmas Eve in 2018. The following year, their daughter Elena Schlöndorff was born. She has a university degree in business psychology, and has been working as a Programme & Marketing Director at Outset.org.uk in Germany (until October 2021).
