Prolific German character actor, formerly a professional shipping agent. Began on stage as a comic in cabaret during the 1920's, mainly active in Berlin. In films from 1933, usually as affable little men or streetwise local characters.

After a stroke in 1988 Gross died on 17 May 1989 at the age of 85 from heart failure.

He made his stage debut in 1926 and in the following years he worked at Berliner cabarets and theaters. Already in those years he often played funny roles.

He took acting lessons at the acting school of the Deutsches Theater in Berlin in 1923.

Besides the movies he also became famous as "Schussel" in many short movies to the topic road safety education and as a member of the radio cabaret "Die Insulaner".

From the 70's the TV offered him many roles too.

After 1934 a short but serious crucial event followed in his career. When he made a political punch line during a cabaret program he was arrested by the Gestapo in 1935 and brought to the concentration camp Esterwegen. Shortly afterwards he was released again but was imposed a working prohibition for several months.

The actor Walter Gross belonged to the most popular film comedians whose comical talent was spotted early for the film business.

Walter Gross also dubbed movies besides his activity as an actor, the most popular figure he dubbed was the animation "Porky Pig".

His horn-rimmed spectacles, his boyish voice and his lovable feature became a trademark and gave him countless roles in the 50's.

First he finished a commercial apprenticeship as a forwarding agent but already in 1923 he made first experiences at amateur theaters.
