Alexis Grivas

Alexis Grivas is a Greek cinematographer, journalist, film critic, and film programmer whose career has bridged the film industries of Greece and Mexico. After studying cinema in Athens and Paris, he became associated with a generation of emerging filmmakers that included Paul Leduc, Felipe Cazals, and Rafael Castanedo. Following the political upheaval in Greece in the late 1960s, he relocated to Mexico, where he became a founding member of the influential alternative filmmaking collective Cine 70 alongside several prominent Mexican filmmakers. During this period, he worked as a cinematographer on documentary and feature projects, including material related to the 1968 student movement and Paul Leduc's The Olympics in Mexico (1969). Beyond his work behind the camera, Grivas played an important role in promoting Mexican cinema internationally, helping expand its presence at major film festivals such as Cannes and Berlin. He later returned to Greece, where he continued his professional activities and served as an advisor to the country's cinematography institutions. Over the course of his career, he has worked on more than fifty film productions and has remained an influential figure in film culture through his contributions as a critic, programmer, and advocate for international cinema.
