- He was openly gay. According to Patrick Mulkern, of "Radio Times" listings magazine, Grimwade put much gay subtext into his script for the Doctor Who (1963) serial "Planet of Fire".
- He finished his long association with Doctor Who (1963) in 1983 after a conflict with producer John Nathan-Turner. He subsequently wrote The Come-Uppance of Captain Katt (1986) as a thinly-veiled parody of Doctor Who (1963) which drew upon his experiences behind the scenes.
