- Following the birth of her daughter Shelley Rix (deceased), who had Down's Syndrome, she became heavily involved, with her husband Lord Rix, in supporting the learning disability charity Mencap.
- Served for years on the Council of the Actor's Charitable Trust.
- Was educated at St Margaret's, Hastings, and at the Presentation Convent, Srinagar, in the Kashmir Valley. Trained at RADA and made her first appearance on stage in Leeds in "Edward My Son" in 1947.
- Mother of Shelley Elspet Rix (b. 1951, died July 2005), Louisa Rix (b. 1955), Jamie Rix (b. 1959), and Jonathan Rix (b. 1961).
- Sister-in-law of Sheila Mercier and Peter Mercier.
