Biography

James Edward Grant was born on July 2, 1905 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He was a writer and director, known for The Alamo (1960), The Comancheros (1961) and Angel and the Badman (1947). He was married to Josephine Foy Grant. He died on February 19, 1966 in Burbank, California, USA.

When John Wayne insisted that Grant be brought in to rewrite the script to Circus World (1964), director Frank Capra, who wanted to use his own script, quit the film. Years later, after Grant had died, Capra included a venomous portrait of the writer in his best-selling autobiography, something which angered John Wayne very much.

Close friend of and frequent film collaborator with John Wayne.

A notoriously heavy drinker for many years, he eventually became a prominent figure in the Los Angeles branch of Alcoholics Anonymous.

James Edward Grant started as a newspaperman in Chicago in the 1920s. He moved to Hollywood to write under contract with Republic. His passions were bullfighting and writing. He spent the last years of his life in Spain.

Grant's wife, Josephine Foy Grant, died in 1987.
