Biography

Louis Moreau Gottschalk was born on May 8, 1829 in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Louis Moreau was a composer, known for Original Sin (2001), Little Women (2019) and The Lovebirds (2020). Louis Moreau died on December 18, 1869 in Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Pictured on one of a set of eight 32¢ US commemorative postage stamps in the Legends of American Music series, issued 12 September 1997, celebrating "Classical Composers & Conductors". In his short lifetime, Gottschalk was the most famous and successful concert pianist in the world. At the end of his Paris debut concert in April 1945, Frederic Chopin went backstage to be introduced to him. "Give me your hand, my boy," Chopin said, kissing him in the French manner. "I predict you will become the king of pianists.".
