González's work is defined by picaresque characters — charming, morally ambiguous lowlifes who drift through consequence without resolution or redemption. Objects move between his characters as displaced meaning: a severed finger, a baseball, a small red radio, a snake in a purse. Animals carry supernatural weight. Money destabilizes rather than liberates. His narratives are compressed, digressive, and formally self-aware, with characters who occasionally acknowledge their own fictionality. Beneath the dark comedy and naturalistic dialogue runs a literary undertow — working-class Latino life rendered without sentimentality, and roads that always point somewhere else."
