Songwriter ("Near You", "Luna Rossa"), composer, author and
archeologist, educated at Cornell University with a BS degree in
agriculture. He operated a dairy farm, then worked in real estate and
construction. During World war II he was an Army Primary Flight
Instructor and Flight Test Engineer. Thereafter he was an archeologist
in Turkey, later lecturing on the topic. He wrote the London stage
score for "The Princess Pocahontas", and authored "Pocahontas" and
other children's books. Joining ASCAP in 1942, his chief musical
collaborators included Duke Ellington, Arthur Kent, Fred Spielman, and
Francis Craig. His other popular-song compositions include "Shepherd
Serenade", "Clopin Clopant", "Wonder When My Baby's Coming Home",
"Huggin' and Chalkin'", "Slowly", "I Thought It Was Over", "How
Wonderful to Know", "You Better Give Me Lots of Lovin'", "Since You
Went Away", "Snap Your Fingers", "Where's My Heart?", "Apollo Umberto
Silvano Roberto Romano", "I Wish I Was Back In My Baby's Arms", "One
Finger Melody", and "You Won't Forget Me".
