Janja Glogovac

Overview

  • Born
1974 · Maribor, Yugoslavia [now Slovenia]

Biography

  • Janja Glogovac is a Slovenian film director, screenwriter, and producer known for her visually distinctive films and documentaries that explore personal, historical, and cultural themes. She is among the first women filmmakers in Slovenia to direct a feature-length film, making her feature debut with L...Like Love.

Glogovac studied Feature Film Directing at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU) in Prague, where she earned her Master's degree in 2002. Between 1994 and 2000, she worked as a director for Croatian Television (HTV), RTV Slovenia, and Czech Television (ČT), directing more than 70 documentaries and television reports throughout Europe.

She gained international recognition with her award-winning short film F, which received the Czech Literary Fund Award for Best Screenplay and was honored as Best European Film by the Paris Film Academy at the Créteil International Women's Film Festival. The film was selected for major festivals including Cannes, Edinburgh, Karlovy Vary, Cottbus, São Paulo, Torino, and Buenos Aires. Kodak selected F to introduce Glogovac as an emerging filmmaking talent at the Cannes Film Festival.

Her documentary Tito explored the private life and legacy of Josip Broz Tito and screened at international festivals including Cannes, Karlovy Vary, Jihlava, and the Buenos Aires International Independent Film Festival. The film received critical recognition and several award nominations, including Slovenia's Viktor Award and recognition at IDFA.

Glogovac's feature film L...Like Love premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and was subsequently screened at festivals including Cannes, Warsaw, and Raindance. The film opened the Brussels edition of Eurociné 27 and toured numerous European cities before being presented throughout the European Union. Inspired by the film, the Valencia International Film Festival established a section dedicated to women directors, with L...Like Love serving as its inaugural opening film.

Her documentary Teslafy Me examines the life, inventions, and vision of Nikola Tesla. The project's transmedia component won Best Transmedia Project at the East Doc Platform in Prague in 2017. The film was distributed in the United States, Canada, and internationally. In 2024, her documentary Nikola Tesla: Waves of the Future was presented at the DocuDoc Film Festival and received wider distribution in Slovenia in 2026.

In addition to directing and screenwriting, Glogovac has produced or co-produced most of her projects. Her work has been presented at major international film festivals and is recognized for its strong visual style, emotional depth, and character-driven storytelling. She is currently completing the documentary Heart of Salsa, an international project exploring the culture, music, and global community surrounding salsa dance.
