Giannis Gionakis(1922-2002)

Giannis Gionakis was a Greek actor and director known for his work in theater and film. He initially studied medicine but shifted to acting after being inspired by a performance at the Karolos Koun Art Theatre, later training at both the Karolos Koun Drama School and the Hellenic Conservatory. Renowned for his comedic talent, Gionakis was also a self-taught musician and dancer. He debuted on stage in 1944 and became a prominent figure in Greek revue theater, founding his own company in 1959 and becoming closely associated with the works of Dimitris Psathas, many of which he adapted to film, including O ahortagos (1967) and The Grouch (1969). Gionakis appeared in over 100 films, with notable performances in Triti kai 13 (1963), Don't Fall in Love on a Saturday (1962), and The Yellow Gloves (1960), earning acclaim for his role as "Brilis." Married to Zeta with whom he had two daughters, he also served as a municipal councilor in Athens and was a supporter of Panathinaikos F.C.. Later in life, he faced health challenges including diabetes and strokes, which left him largely bedridden.
