She adopted her Mother’s Irish family name Gifford as her stage name when she performed in Repertory Theatre and then the Royal Shakespeare Company, where she Nat and married the actor John Cater. On television, she appeared in many dramas for the BBC and ITV and interspersed with theatre and radio. She is also a qualified teacher of French and English. Wendy was married to actor John Cater and their daughter, Emma, appeared with Wendy in "The Doctors". She was nominated for Best Actress for her role as Linda Loman in Death of a Salesman.
