Biography

Giuseppe Giacosa was an Italian poet, playwright and librettist renowned for his contributions to verismo theatre and opera at the turn of the 20th century. Originally trained in law, he shifted to a lifelong career in the arts, gaining recognition with early plays such as Una Partita a Scacchi and developing a reputation for insightful depictions of contemporary bourgeois life in Piedmont. Giacosa held teaching and directorial positions at Milanese institutions and accompanied Sarah Bernhardt on an American tour, chronicling his experiences in Impressioni d'America. He wrote verse dramas including Tristi amori and Come le foglie, and collaborated closely with Luigi Illica on the libretti for Giacomo Puccini's La bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and Manon Lescaut, refining dialogue into polished poetic form. Admired in Italy and abroad, he was also director of the literary magazine La Lettura and traveled widely, bringing a cosmopolitan perspective to his work.
