- At the time of his death he was writing the comic book "Dr. Fate" for DC Comics. Many of his scripts were written from his hospital bed in Las Vegas, where he was being treated for pulmonary fibrosis.

- Gerber's "Howard the Duck" stories often depicted Howard and his lover Beverly Switzler involuntarily getting caught up in the schemes of villains and eccentrics. Part of the series' humor was that both of them were perpetually unlucky, ending up in dangerous situations regardless of their intentions.
