Biography

Rob George graduated from Adelaide University with a B.A. (Hons) Psych and a Dip Ed and after a brief time teaching and in education research departed regular employment and sought his fortune in film, TV and theatre. "Captain Johnno", a family telemovie Rob wrote, won an International Emmy Award in the late 1980s. Rob wrote and produced the family mini-series "The River Kings" which was broadcast on the ABC and internationally and he co-produced and wrote the family feature "Selkie". Rob wrote the feature "Fair Game" in the mid 1980s and the film was re-released in the US in 2022. Rob was the co-originating writer, with Peter Goldsworthy, of the feature film "Passion" which was based on his stage play "Percy and Rose" and starred Richard Roxburgh and Barbara Hershey.

For the stage, Rob's first full length play was "Les" which was the first locally written play performed at The Space Theatre at the Festival Centre. Other productions in the Festival Centre included "Sandy Lee Live at Nui Dat", "The Humble Doctor" and "Errol Flynn's Great Big Adventure Book for Boys." "Percy and Rose", starring Dennis Olsen and Daphne Grey, premiered at the 1982 Adelaide Festival and for the 2008 Adelaide Festival Rob and his wife, Maureen Sherlock, wrote and produced "Lovers & Haters - the turbulent times of Don Dunstan." State Opera SA produced a workshop production of Rob's operetta "In the Dome Room at 2 o'clock" in 2018.

Rob was the inaugural story editor on the ABC serial "Something in The Air" and later worked on another ABC series, "MDA", as story editor, script editor and writer. He also worked as a script editor and writer on "Blue Heelers" and wrote for the children's TV series "Silver Sun". Rob co-wrote, directed and produced the ABC documentary "Fearless" about 92 year old playwright Julia Britton and co-wrote the dramatized documentary "Wire Through The Heart", about the building of the Overland Telegraph, for the ABC's Constructing Australia series. Other credits include the animation series, "The Woodlies" and "Vic The Viking" for Flying Bark Productions and a documentary "Trapped" about a Sudanese family which he wrote, directed and produced. Recent films include the low budget feature "The Battle for Jericho" and three feature-length documentaries which screened as part of the SA History Festival: "Von Loves her Modernist" (2022) about Max Harris and Adelaide in the 1940s, "The Many Loves of Geoffrey Dutton" (2023) and "Madge & Bibs and the Advancing Girls" (2024) about Adelaide's revolutionary Advanced School for Girls.

Rob has published his first original adult novel, "Lake Beauty" and has written three novelizations of screenplays - "Captain Johnno", "You and Me and Uncle Bob" and "Water Rats - Frank's Story."
