After graduating from high school in 1998, he did his basic military service in the Bundeswehr until 1990. Geissen then completed a traineeship at the Hamburg youth station "ok-Radio", where he then worked as an editor and presenter. Geissen began his media career as a TV presenter at ZDF in 1994, where he first presented the program "X-Trem", then in 1995 a youth magazine. From 1995 to 1997, Geissen also worked as a presenter and sports director at the Hamburg local TV "HH-1". From 1996 to 1998 he also hosted the program "Dreamland Germany". Geissen also appeared in guest appearances on the ARD program "Gegen den Wind" and in the action series "Alphateam" on SAT.1. In 1998 he was appointed presenter of the travel magazine "Reiselust".

In 1999, the private TV channel RTL signed him to his own talk show, which he moderated there under the title "The Oliver Geissen Show". In addition to moderating his daily talk show, the 500th edition of which was broadcast on February 5, 2002, the popular talker also worked on other projects. RTL 2000 appointed him to host the successful real documentary container series "Big Brother". In 2002, Geissen took over the moderation of the "80s Show" for the same station, for which he received the German Television Prize in October. The entertainer was also awarded the "Golden Camera" in February 2003 for the show concept of the "80s Show".

At the beginning of March 2003, Geissen also moderated the show "Die 10". In May 2003, Geissen surprised television audiences with his event show "Absolut Madonna", in which the American pop star Madonna appeared in person. In December 2004, Geissen moderated the new RTL show "The Great Knowledge Test 2004", in which viewers were also able to take part interactively in a knowledge test. This was followed by show series such as "The GDR Show" (2003) and "20 Years of RTL" (2004). In September 2005, 2006 and 2007 he presented the Saturday evening live program "Guinness World Records - The Greatest World Records", whose candidates were included in the Guinness Book of Records if successful. In 2004 he founded his own production company, "Norddeich TV". The company is a joint project between RTL Television (75%) and Oliver Geissen (25%).

Oliver Geissen has been married since 1999 and lives separated from his wife and their sons. He has been in a relationship with actress Christina Plate since the summer of 2007.
