  • Mr. Gardner was born in Washington, D.C. He attended CCNY and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. He majored in filmmaking and minored in English Literature. Upon graduation, he took a number of jobs and applied for grants to make the short film I Could Hear You All the Way Down the Hall (1976). He made that film and, after many years of applying for further grants, made a feature: Clarence and Angel (1980) which WON (2nd Prize) and a Humanity Award at the Locarno Film Festival. Mr. Gardner then did another feature: King James Version (1988). While at a film festival in France, he was approached by a Producer to write a screenplay. This lead to several jobs that kept him in France. While there, he wrote "Hyena". It was purchased by Films Pleine and re-titled: The Heart's Cry (1994) (aka "Le Crie Du Coeur"). Mr. Gardner worked for 2 years with European and North African filmmakers on their screenplays. He returned to the US and got involved in writing plays. He co-founded 'LA Playwrights Lab' and had several playwright's plays produced. Mr. Gardner co-wrote an indie film, Wedding Palace (2013), which WON first prize in the Chinese and CineGear Festivals (at Paramount Studios), & WON the "Silver Lion" at the Venice Film Festival, where it premiered & at the Berlin Film Festival. Mr. Gardner has continued writing screenplays.

    .Mr. Gardner was the playwright for produced theatre, (starting in 2004), with several productions: "Prisoner of Love", "Death Unit", & "Homework- The Basement", all at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles. Also, he was the playwright of "New World Order" at the Stella Adler Theatre (Los Angeles-2004); He wrote & produced the reading of "Shading" at the Egyptian Theatre (2005).

    .He was Co-founder of the L.A. Playwright's Lab (Theatre Group) in 2009, & the Executive Producer of the Spring production (5 One-Act Plays, called "Beginings") by the LA Playwright's Lab at the Elephant Asylum Theatre (2012), & Fall production (7 One-Act Plays, called "7 Corpses") at the Complex Theatre (2013). He also produced the LA Playwright's Lab - full Reading Series, called "A Reading of 6 Two-Act plays" (2013) in Los Angeles and N. Hollywood, & the reading of "The Mapmakers Lines Are Crooked" at The Complex Theatre (2014).

    .Literarywise, Mr. Gardner has written a novel (fiction) called, "Biko Lives" (2021), published & available on Amazon. .He's the Co-Creator of the Thursday Night Writers Group (2016)= a 7-member group of writers, writing all forms: poems, novels, screenplays, pilots, and essays. .He's been recently invited to join the Actors Studio Playwright and Directors Unit (2022). This is where a playwright is attached to a director and actors, as a play is developed from Sept - June. Mr. Gardner is presently working on: "The Mapmakers Lines Are Crooked" (two-act play).
