He had himself been a professional aviator, who piloted Douglas DC-2 and Douglas DC-3 aircraft for various American airlines in the 1930's. During World War II, he flew C-87 transports for the U.S. Army Air Force Transport Command in diverse and far-flung locations, from the North Atlantic to the Himalayas.
