- Mavis Gallant was born on August 11, 1922 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She was a writer, known for Drága kisfiam! (1978), Telescope (1963) and Contact, l'encyclopédie de la création (2006). She was married to John Gallant. She died on February 18, 2014 in Paris, France.

- She was awarded the O.C. (Officer of the Order of Canada) on June 22, 1981 and C.C. (Companion of the Order of Canada) on October 21, 1992 for her services to literature.
- She returned to Canada as writer-in-residence at the University of Toronto in 1983-84. Although she lived most of her adult life in Paris, she retained her Canadian citizenship.
- In 1950, she left Montreal for Europe, where she eventually settled in Paris. She lived in a small apartment on the Rive Gauche until her death.
