Biography

Ludwig Fulda was born on July 15, 1862 in Frankfurt am Main, Free City of Frankfurt [now Hesse, Germany]. He was a writer, known for Two-Faced Woman (1941), Das verlorene Paradies (1917) and The Lost Paradise (1914). He was married to Helene Anna Klara Grinwalszky and Ida Theumann. He died on April 8, 1939 in Berlin, Germany.

He was a prolific translator of classic European plays, including the works of Molière, Beaumarchais, Carlo Goldoni,Pedro Calderón de la Barca, Henrik Ibsen, Edmond Rostand, and many others. His translations remain the most frequently used in German stage revivals.

One son: Karl Hermann (Carl H.) Fulda (1909-1975); German-American Business Lawyer.

Throughout the 1930s, as a Jew, he faced increasing persecution by the Nazis. There were 429 performances of his various plays and translations in Germany in 1932, and none following the advent of Adolf Hitler. Despite affidavits by his son, who had emigrated to the USA, he was denied an entry visa the the United States as the admission quota was 'full', and took his own life aged 76.
