- Mark's brother Joe was killed while Mark was filming 'Young Catherine' in 1990. Following a mid-air collision he attempted to fly his damaged plane away from populated areas and was killed in the subsequent crash.
- His brother (and only other sibling) Joe, died in an airplane crash just a few years before his own death in 1996.
- The yellow Harley Davidson on which he died, at the time, was one of only six like it in the world.
- He was the son of Grace and David Lionel Frankel. His father had Polish Jewish ancestry, while his mother's family were Iraqi Jews and Indian Jews, from Baghdad and Mumbai, respectively.
