Maria Forescu

  • She first studied music, acting and singing at the conservatory in Prague and afterwards she became popular as an operetta singer.
  • When the National Socialist seized the power in Germany her career came to an abrupt end because of her Jewish origin.
  • At the beginning of the 20s she became famous as a singer and she got engagements in whole Europe and finally came to Berlin too.
  • She was deprived of living a respected life and was prohibited from engaging in any professional activities.
  • She became one of the most busy movie actress of the 20s in the German silent movie era. Beside it she was also successful as an operetta singer at the beginning of her career.
  • Throughout her career she acted in approximately 160 films.
  • Following her 1938 expulsion and due to the sharp rise in anti-Semitism, she took refuge with Maria Hirschburg on the Motzstrasse in Berlin-Wilmersdorf. On August 15, 1942, she was supposed to be deported to the Riga ghetto, but her name was eliminated from the list because of her poor health. Living undercover during the later years of World War II, she survived both the war and the Holocaust and died in 1947 in Berlin-Müggelheim.
  • Forescu who was of Jewish origin was expelled from the Reich Student Council film in 1938.
  • The 20s marked the height of her career and she became a much demanded support actress. In the following years he impersonated numerous roles which increased her popularity.
  • She was able to continue her film career in the sound film era of the 30s till 1933.
