Malcolm S. Forbes

Trivia

Malcolm S. Forbes

  • Volunteered his private 747 to deliver emergency supplies during natural disasters around the world.
  • Was close to Elizabeth Taylor shortly before his death. Among the gifts he gave her was a Harley-Davidson motorcycle with a purple fuel tank.
  • Was the first man to pilot a hot air balloon over the Great Wall of China.
  • Founder and publisher of Forbes Magazine, a resource of financial and investment reporting.
  • The Communist press of the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China both derided Forbes as "a tool of the capitalists". He would later promote his magazine as a "Capitalist Tool", name his private 747 "Capitalist Tool", and form a motorcycle club called "The Capitalist Tools".
  • An avid motorcyclist, he owned several Harley-Davidsons.
  • Biography in: "The Scribner Encyclopedia of American Lives". Volume Two, 1986-1990, pages 298-300. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1999.
  • Made his son Timothy take a bagpipe lesson every Sunday, before he would give the boy his allowance. This was to instill the idea of doing what he had to do before getting paid.
  • Elected to the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2007 for his services to business enterprise (inaugural election). Official induction ceremonies held in May 2008.
  • Father of Steve Forbes and Tim Forbes.
