- Fletcher, the author of novels, stage plays and screenplays, was best known for Sorry, Wrong Number, first broadcast on May 25, 1943.
Fletcher wanted to be a writer from childhood. In 1933 she graduated from Vassar College and was a typist, music librarian and publicity writer for CBS. While typing radio plays, she was inspired to master the form.
In an interview with The Washington Post, Fletcher said: "Writing suspense stories is like working on a puzzle. You bury the secret, lead the reader down the path, put in false leads and throughout the story remain completely logical. Each word must have meaning and be written in a fine literary style. Mysteries are a challenge, a double task for the writer, for the reader is aiming to solve the puzzle before you do."

- Developed the idea for her radio play 'Hitchhiker' (which was subsequently filmed) after twice seeing a strange-looking man (first on the Brooklyn Bridge and, again, on the Pulaski Skyway, New Jersey) while driving en route to Hollywood with her then-husband, Bernard Herrmann.
