- Mary Lou Finlay was born in 1947 in Canada.
- Graduated cum laude from the University of Ottawa in 1967 with a BA in English and French literature.
- National exposure came for Finlay in 1975, when she moved to Toronto to co-host CBC's Take Thirty (1962). She hosted her own program, Finlay and Company, in 1976 and 1977.
- In 1981 she became co-host, with Barbara Frum, of CBC Television's The Journal (1986).
- Won a prestigious Martin Goodman Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University.
- Has been host of CBC Radio One's 'As It Happens' since September 1997.
