He was educated at Greenway School in Wiltshire and Allhallows in Rousden, Devon, where he joined the school drama society. On leaving school, he moved to London where he became assistant to a top London fashion photographer. While traveling around Europe taking fashion photographs, he became restless and joined the Alicante School of Bullfighting. After two terms, he was badly gored by a bull and decided that was enough.
