- Was nominated for two Tony Awards in 1977 for "Happy End:" as Best Book (Musical), for his adaptation of Elisabeth Hauptmann's libretto, and as Best Score, for his adaptation of Bertolt Brecht's lyrics.
- Twice received the George Jean Nathan Award for Dramatic Criticism and has twice been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in criticism.
- Began contributing to The Village Voice in 1971, and was its chief theatre critic from 1983-2013.
