On The 700 Club (1966) he stated that the attacks on September 11, 2001, were the result of God removing a protective barrier from the United States as punishment for the nation's acceptance of homosexuals and feminists and blamed the politicians for "allowing it to happen", a sentiment that show host Pat Robertson readily agreed with. Contrary to popular belief, neither Falwell nor Robertson ever apologized.

Declared that Tinky-Winky, a character on the childrens' TV show Teletubbies (1997), was in fact a homosexual, as he carries what Falwell claimed to be a purse, and was intended to subliminally indoctrinate children to accept homosexuality.

Once claimed that the Antichrist would be a Jewish male, something he apologized for when he heard the outcry against it.

Sued Penthouse magazine for publishing an interview he'd given to an independent journalist.

Was once the victim of a prankster who programmed his computer to dial Falwell's 1-800 number every 30 seconds, then hang up. Since Falwell's organization had to pay for each call, it wound up costing them thousands of dollars.

Sued Hustler publisher Larry Flynt for libel and defamation of character over a humor piece which made Falwell look like an incestuous drunkard. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled that no matter how tasteless it was, humor and satire were protected under the First Amendment.

Founded Lynchburg Baptist College in 1971, now called Liberty University.

Started his first church in 1956, using an abandoned bottling plant in Lynchburg, with just 35 members.

Was a star athlete who turned down an offer to play professional baseball to attend Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Mo.

His funeral service was at Thomas Road Baptist Church on May 22, 2007. He was subsequently buried on Liberty University's campus. His casket was supplied Whitten Timberlake Chapel Funeral Home.

Hospitalized with pneumonia in February 2005.
