Former English teacher at a comprehensive school in Cannock, Staffs.
Former actor, trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. A successful author of single plays in the 1950's, he later turned to writing screenplays (often uncredited). His best work was on 10 Rillington Place (1971).
Took his professional surname from Shakespeare's "Richard II".
