Michael Esser(I)

Michael Esser is an accomplished writer, project developer for co-productions and an expert in intellectual property scouting. Currently based in Los Angeles and Berlin, he serves as a critical advisor to European companies forming co-production agreements with U.S. networks and studios, a role that has resulted in numerous successful partnerships, based on Pulitzer Prize winning IP he optioned. Before relocating to the United States, Michael worked in development roles for esteemed German media companies like UFA and Ziegler Film. At Ziegler Film until 2000, he spearheaded the adaptation of over 30 novels into TV movies. His efforts culminated in winning the Deutscher Fernsehpreis for his show running role in the German adaptation of "Ugly Betty." Subsequently, he founded Dramaworks, a creative agency that flourished from 2000, representing a diverse range of talent and serving major German networks and studios. Michael began his career by editing award-winning films and directing commercials for high-profile clients like Procter & Gamble and Nestle. Separately, Michael has also made his mark in academia and advisory roles. He advises the European Union on science communication and has lectured at prestigious institutions, including UCLA, the Italian Film Academy, and the German Film University where he currently teaches writing for TV series in cooperation with Netflix. These academic roles are underpinned by his PhD from TU Berlin, which adds a scholarly dimension to his practical acumen in content strategy and story development. He is a member of the German Television Academy (DafF) and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (IATAS) and serves as a juror for both institutions. Volunteering his time, Michael is a panelist for the Neighborhood Justice Program of the City Attorney of Los Angeles. Beyond his professional and volunteer commitments, he is an avid marathon runner and enjoys flying single-engine airplanes. Now a U.S. citizen as of 2023, Michael continues to serve as a transatlantic bridge in the realm of storytelling and content development.
