Best remembered by the public for his role as Arthur Biehl, the Grand Hotel's venerable bellman in the romantic fantasy drama Somewhere in Time (1980), and attended annual reunions of cast, crew and fans of the movie at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan.

He was the first to portray the voice of Grandpa Longneck in "The Land Before Time". Afterwards, Kenneth Mars took over for the character.

The "New Film Starts" section of the October 28, 1987, issue of Variety lists the movie "Night Falls", directed by Eric T. Nicolaisen, which began filming in Gainesville, Florida, Oct 19, 1987. Cast included Audrey Landers, Brian Patrick Clarke, Bill Erwin, Ruth Buzzi, Pamela Jean Bryant, and Gary Imhoff. A comedy-horror story about a college grad student who falls for a succubus. No evidence the film was ever released.

His parents and sister are buried at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens in San Angelo, Texas.

He was cremated at Grand View's Abbott and Hast Mortuary in Glendale, California.

He had recorded lines for the character of Littlefoots Grandpa Longneck in Don Bluth's The Land Before Time 1988 however Don Bluth decided to make the character a mute character except for a laugh at the beginning of the film. Erwin is still credited for voicing the character.

After over 50 years of playing mostly small, one & done roles, Bill Erwin received his first and only award recognition with an Emmy nomination for famously playing the crotchety old man Sid Field on Seinfeld.

Bill Erwin was not related to well-known 1950's actor Stu Erwin, although Bill did make an appearance on Stu's very popular sitcom.
