Enya

Trivia

Enya

  • She creates her signature sound partly by layering many recordings of her voice. One of her pieces, Angeles, has as many as 500 layered tracks of her own voice.
  • Comes from a region in the West of Ireland where the Gaelic language is still spoken. Although Enya can speak fluent English, her first language is Gaelic.
  • Director James Cameron wanted Enya to compose music for Titanic (1997), but when a deal couldn't be reached, James Horner ended up composing an Enya-influenced score for the film.
  • The late Pope John Paul II was reportedly a big fan of her music. She was even invited to the Vatican to sing for him.
  • Name is a registered trademark.
  • Adopted the spelling "Enya" in order to avoid having to continually explain how to pronounce her true first name, "Eithne."
  • Has a minor planet/asteroid named after her (6433 Enya). Also has a species of fish named after her (Leporinus enyae) found in the Orinoco River drainage area.
  • As a recording entity, "Enya" is often considered to be three people: Enya herself, producer Nicky Ryan and lyricist Roma Ryan. The trio have worked together since the early 1980s.
  • Enya has not officially toured or performed a live concert. Most TV appearances have been accomplished by her either lip-syncing to her original recording, or singing along with it. There are some exceptions where she has done live performances, the latest was for her single 'Echoes In Rain', in 2016. According to Enya, tours and live concerts of her music would be quite difficult to replicate her sound to the right quality on-stage.
  • Sister of Maire Brennan.
  • "Boadicea" was an instrumental/humming piece released by Enya in 1987. It is her most sampled piece, reportedly sampled over 63 times by other artists. "Boadicea" was used by Diddy and Enya re-recorded vocals for the 2004 Mario Winans hit 'I Dont Wanna Know' also sung by Mario Winans . It was also used without permission in the Fugees' song "Ready or Not." The Fugees originally did not credit Enya on their album, although she did not sue them either. It was later settled and she is now credited.
  • Because of the soothing nature of her music, the singer's "Only Time" received extensive airplay in the wake of the 9/11 catastrophe. It was this exposure that firmly introduced Enya to American audiences on a grand scale.
  • Enya has a vast vocal range. It roughly changes from a mezzo-soprano to alto on songs such as "Pilgrim", "Trains and Winter Rains", "Pax Deorum" , "Caribbean Blue", "Long Long Journey", "Diamonds On The Water", and most notably "Dark Sky Island".
  • Her music has earned Enya a multitude of awards, including 4 Grammy Awards, and 7 World Music Awards. She also has had many notable nominations, including the 2002 Oscar nomination for Lord Of The Rings. Her latest nomination so far was for the Grammy Awards in 2017.
  • Enya bought her castle in 1997 for an estimated EUR3.8 million. It is situated in Killiney, Co. Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Ireland. The castle also has a large window view, overlooking the Irish Sea.
