Received his bachelor's degree in broadcasting from Central Michigan University (CMU) in Mount Pleasant, Michigan (1957). He later received an honorary doctorate of humane letters from the university (1980).

He lost a brother, a sister, and a daughter to cancer (the former to pancreatic cancer and the latter two from ovarian cancer). He nearly lost his son Alexander to a brain hemorrhage/stroke in May 2013.

He was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Television at 6746 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California on February 24, 1998.

Father of two sons and a daughter from his first marriage: Alexander Enberg, Andrew Enberg and Jennifer Enberg (who passed away from ovarian cancer on May 27, 2015 at age 52).

Father of a son and two daughters from his second marriage: Ted Enberg, Nicole Enberg Vaz, and Emily Packer.

Inducted into the West Coast Boxing Hall of Fame (2017).

Inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame on December 31, 2011.

He was also the radio voice of the Los Angeles Rams and California (Now Los Angeles) Angels.
