Biography

John Emerson was born on May 29, 1874 in Sandusky, Ohio, USA. He was a writer and director, known for San Francisco (1936), Come on In (1918) and Reaching for the Moon (1917). He was married to Anita Loos. He died on March 7, 1956 in Pasadena, California, USA.

Suffered from mental illness and spent the last 18 years of his life confined to hospital.

Son of an Episcopalian minister. Attended universities in Heidelberg (Germany) and Chidcago. First acted on the New York stage in 1904, later graduating to theater management and direction. Joined D.W. Griffith's Triangle Films as director/scenarist in 1915. Successful collaboration on screenplays with his wife Anita Loos (married 1919). President of Actor's Equity, 1920-28.
