In 1974, he joined the Japanese Buddhist Sect NSA or Nichiren Shoshu of America. In 1995, he traveled to Japan and formally re-joined the Nichiren Shoshu Temple in Taisekiji, Japan. After had departing from it in 1991, due to being unhappy with the culture and "Japanese cultural domination". In 2012, a Nichiren Shoshu Priest visited his home and asked him to leave culture out of Buddhism. He took this message as a cue to depart Nichiren Shoshu.
