Biography

Brazilian writer, humor journalist, screenwriter and columnist Leon Eliachar was born on 10 October, 1922 in Cairo, Egypt. He spend most of his life in Rio de Janeiro, working as columnist to several magazines and newspapers, most notably Última Hora, with his famous column entitled "Penúltima Hora". A multi-talented man, besides his always humored news writing, he wrote two film screenplays, the Carnival comedies Carnaval em Caxias (1954) and Carnaval em Marte (1955), and one TV series in the 1970's. Also worked as a secretary for Revista Manchete, one of the most popular Brazilian magazines of its time and he also wrote radio shows. Eliachar is best known for his books, some of them autobiographical works, and among those of his published works are "O Homem ao Quadrado" (1960), "O Homem ao Cubo" (1963), "A Mulher em Flagrante" (1965), "O Homem ao Zero" (1967), "10 em Humor" (1968) - which was a collaboration along with the likes of Henfil, Millôr Fernandes, Stanislaw Ponte Preta and many other famous cartoonists of the period - and his final book, "O Homem ao Meio" (1979).

On 1 June, 1987, he was murdered by two gunmen in his apartment, in what later was discovered as a crime ordered by a powerful farmer/councilman who knew that Eliachar was having an affair with his wife.
