- Hilton Edwards was born on February 2, 1903 in London, England, UK. He was an actor and director, known for Return to Glennascaul (1952), Othello (1951) and Half a Sixpence (1967). He died on November 18, 1982 in Dublin, Ireland.
- English-born Irish actor and theatrical producer. First performed on stage at the Old Vic in 1922. Co-founder in 1928 of the Gate Theatre in Dublin.
- Orson Welles claimed that his career was greatly influenced by Edwards, whom he regarded as one of his closest friends. This was not surprising, as Welles got his professional start in acting at the Gate Theatre in Dublin (in 1931), which Edwards co-founded and ran. Many years later, Welles starred in the one film Edwards directed. "Return To Glennascaul".
- Was nominated for Broadway's 1966 Tony Award as Best Director (Dramatic) for Brian Friel's "Philadelphia, Here I Come!"
- A constant presence in the Irish theatre scene throughout the mid-20th century, along with partner and collaborator, Micháel McLiamóir.
