Brother of Alfred Döblin

As a Jew he was no longer able to work in Germany in the arising National Socialism and he was excluded from the Reichstheaterkammer. Therefore he emigrated via Prague and Vienna to Switzerland where he worked again as a acting teacher. Beside it he wrote lines and appeared on stage from 1944 again.

Hugo Döblin began his acting career at the Stadttheater Celle in 1896 and only one year later he went to Berlin where he soon became established on stage and he appeared at important theaters like the "Reinhardt-Bühnen" and at "Das Deutsche Theater".

The 20s marked the height of his career. Besides numerous other support roles in silent movies he was also very successful as a cabaret artist. Among others he appeared at "Café Grössenwahn" and "Die Wespen".

When the sound film arose in the 30s he had a positive attitude to it and he even founded the first sound film school in Berlin.

The actor Hugo Döblin first finished a so-called bourgeois education as a businessman but the acting fascinated him in his younger days already. Because acting was not a serious profession he took acting lesson secretly by Josef Kainz and Paul Pauli from 1891. This risk was worthwhile in more ways than one. Hugo Döblin not only became a demanded actor on stage and in movies but also got married with the daughter of Paul Pauli in 1901.
