- Was married to the daughter of the Soviet Communist Party Politburo member Dmitry Polyansky.
- In one of his last interviews, already knowing about his disease, he spoke of his plans to make a new movie - he wanted to put on screen the story of the Russian poet Mayakovsky and his lover Lilya Brik.

- In 2007 organized and was elected the president of the highly-acclaimed by film critics "2Morrow" Film Festival. The third one will open 16.10.2009 - the day, when he would have been 62.
- His movie "Music for December" was shown in Festival de Cannes in the Un Certain Regard section.
- His debut as a director was "The Black Monk" (1988) based on an Anton Chekhov's story. It won the prize of the Culture fund of Georges Sadoul (France) for best debut and two more prizes at the Venice Film Festival.
- Before becoming a film director, he was an actor (1970 - 1980 or 1981) of the Taganka theatre, famous for its free spirit and liberal politics. This was partly the reason why his top-rank communist father-in-law lost his place in the Soviet Communist Party Politburo.
